Earth Day 2020 Coming to a Computer Near You! #zoommeeting

🌏 Happy 50th Earth Day Friends! 🌏

April 22nd, 2020, one of many conservationists favorite holidays!

Can you believe that since 1970 we have been collect garbage, planting trees, cleaning up coral reefs, showing Earthy movies, signing conservation petitions, standing up for our earth and planning for a better future for our planet! Whats not to love about it?

What makes this particular Earth Day hard for most, is #covid19 and our social distancing restrictions. It’s proving to be quite challenging to come to grips with not being able to go to my favorite native plant nursery, buy WAY too many plants, redo my entire rental, then go do a cleanup on some beach, and celebrate at a low waste/plastic free restaurant, doing our traditional Earth Day jive. But its different now.

No Earth Day hugs for this gal right here… Unless it’s a cyber hug, then those are welcome.

Now more than ever have our ecosystems has a much needed break from a seriously chronic-human problem. Skys are clearer (seen from space!) free of plane contrails, beaches are cleaner, wildlife have some relief from dogs and kids chasing them around the park, or our highway noise pollution bombarding critters ears. This is one of those silver-lining moments that I feel guilty for having. My ecological in the past 4 years is off the charts, and it feels comforting that for even a few months sea turtles for example have ample room to nest without as much human interference. Unfortunately however it will not last long, and there maybe even be some serious negative impacts/rebounding after fossil fuel consumption booms, and factory production races to compete with our “new normal”. Enough of that… Let’s bring it back around to the reason you are here. Earth Day!

I have a few quick questions for you.

  1. Are you a parent and are looking for safe, at-home Earth Day activities?

  2. Are you looking for a fun yet entertaining hour or so say, around 5pm?

  3. Do you want to learn about our ocean, penguins and other marine life?

  4. Want to paint some kindness rocks?

  5. Want to know what it’s like to be a marine biologist?

  6. Take a group photo with us holding out “There Is No Planet B” Earth Day signs?

Look no further!

🌏 Join Us April 22nd, at 5:00 EST on ZOOM  🌏

I am co-hosting a fun Earth Day Chat & Paint on Zoom for you guys with the amazing Anya of Pennies for Penguins discussing our beautiful blue, the incredible role penguins play in our oceans, and what you can be a planetary hero every day!

Before we go into what is on the agenda, let me tell you about my INCREDIBLY INSPIRING little girl I met a few years back.

Blog, Meet Anya

I had met this brilliant little girl, her brother and amazing mother Shivani at a 4ocean Beach Cleanup event I had been working in Boca Raton last year or so. She walked right up to my table, and asked me something to the effect of:

“Hello, I’m Anya what are we learning about today”

I immediately knew I was speaking with someone who spoke the same ecological language as me, even as an 8 year old.

Our curiosity, passion and spunk made it extremely easy to teach, ask great forward thinking questions, and work through with her some solutions to our oceans most pressing issues. Anyway, we were chatting about everything under the ocean surface for quite a while and decided we needed to connect. We exchanged info, happened to attend a handful of other ocean conservation events, and here we are a year later! Anya like me cares deeply about the health and sustainability of our oceans and is filled with a wealth of knowledge packed in a small and adorably wonderful package. She totally caught me off-guard that day, and felt that if anyone was going to help save the world, this girl was stepping up to the challenge.

Here is a little bit about Anya from her website www.penniesforpenguins.com

When Anya learned about Penguins in her classroom for her first book report in Kindergarten, she learned that there were so many predators and ways for penguins to become extinct.  She decided to collect money to save these penguins.  She has saved 9 penguins through Defenders of Wildlife and can't wait to save even more!  She wants to save 10 more penguins this year!  She only needs $280 to go!

Anya is a precocious, happy, healthy 8-year old who lives in Florida.  She recycles, eats healthy, and wants everyone to help prevent penguins from dying.  She wants to save all the penguins in the world and one day hopes to visit Antarctica as well.

Adopt a Penguin Program

With a donation of $35 to Pennies for Penguins you will receive a beautiful plush 10" stuffed animal penguin and a certificate of adoption - and all the proceeds will go to vital penguin research in Antarctica, where she has partnered with researchers studying how we can support penguins and save their habitats.

I have witnessed these penguins in real life and THEY ARE THE SOFTEST PENGUIN EVER!
